The museum is housed in a new building designed to display the
remains of Chichester's Roman Bath house. On the ground floor this open
archaeological site is interpreted by a short film showing the use of
the baths and what the site has been used for since. These remains are
one of the most significant Roman finds in Chichester and include two
excavated caldaria - hot rooms. The full site excavations
revealed that the baths were a massive complex - estimated to have been
5,500 square metres or the size of a small football pitch - and would
have included many buildings and open spaces. Iconic Roman objects are
also on display in this gallery including the Bosham Head, a piece of
monumental Roman sculpture unable to be accurately identified as a
particular emperor because of the eroded features.
