Auckland Castle Deer House

A charming Gothic Revival 'eyecatcher' built in 1760 in the park of the Bishops of Durham. It provided deer with shelter and food, and had grounds for picnics and rooms for enjoying the view. Read more about the history of the deer house. Before You Go Opening Times: There is no access to the interior. The exterior is open to view from the surrounding parkland daily, 10am-6pm between April and September, and 10am-4pm between October and March. Access: Paths are very uneven and part of the route is over grass. Parking: Charged parking is available in Bishop Auckland, not managed by English Heritage. The Deer House is within parkland behind Auckland Castle. Facilities: Nearby Bishop Auckland has a range of places to eat, drink and shop. There are public toilets in the bus statio. Dogs: The parkland is grazed by livestock, so please keep dogs on leads. Other Information: Auckland Castle is managed by Auckland Castle Trust. Plan a Great Day Out If you are exploring County Durham, why not drop by Barnard Castle, situated in the town of the same name. 'Barny', as it is known locally, is a 30 minute drive from Auckland Castle through some of the most beautiful scenery in County Durham. Egglestone Abbey and Bowes Castle are also nearby.
