It is 120 years since Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery first opened its doors beneath the clock tower on Chamberlain Square. Since those days BM&AG has gone from strength to strength and is now home to artworks and artefacts that are the envy of the world. More than half a million objects fill the cabinets and walls of Birmingham’s museums. Here you will find everything from Renaissance masterpieces to 9,000-year-old Middle-Eastern treasures. BM&AG is particularly admired for its Pre-Raphaelite paintings and drawings – the museum boasts the largest collection in the world. Bronze Buddhas and Egyptian Mummies also reside here in this diverse and fascinating place. The BM&AG collections encompass fine art from the 14th century onwards; applied arts like ceramics and metalwork; and historic collections, including everything from local archaeology to world cultures. |
