With its moat, twin towered gatehouse and imposing battlements, Caerlaverock Castle is the epitome of the medieval stronghold. The castle’s turbulent history owes much to its proximity to England which brought it into border conflicts. Today, visitors can enjoy a siege warfare exhibition, a children’s adventure park and a nature trail. The shop features a range of local products made in Dumfries and Galloway. Accessibility STB Category 3 - Visitors with a physical disability can see most of the ground floor and courtyard of the castle and a substantial part of the grounds. The visitor centre, shop and display area are wheelchair accessible. Stone carvings in the museum area and in the castle are hands on exhibits. A nature trail in the nearby woodlands is not suitable for those using wheelchairs or visitors with limited mobility.
