The title is a popular type of zoological garden, and most zoos are gardens or parks containing buildings and other enclosures. Zoos normally maintain only wild wildlife, many of these from remote nations around the world.

However, a number of zoos house domestic wildlife such as cows and lambs to demonstrate to city youngsters that have no opportunity to go see farms. Children's zoos are occasionally incorporated in zoological gardens. They might have nurseries where youngsters can view small wildlife, and sometimes now have areas where children are able to pet and feed tame wildlife.  Zoos are also important centres for wildlife conservation. Many zoos breed protected species, several of which are no longer found in the wild.
