DAWS CASTLE
The clifftop fortress of Daws Castle was founded by King Alfred to defend the people of Watchet against Viking attacks.

BEFORE YOU GO
Access: The walk from Watchet is challenging, so we recommend wearing sturdy footwear. The site is exposed with no shelter.

Parking: Paid parking is available in Watchet.

How to Find it: From Watchet follow the South West Coast Path to the west for half a mile uphill.

Facilities: There are shops, food outlets and toilets nearby in Watchet.

Dogs: Sheep are often grazing the site, and they may not always be immediately visible. Please keep dogs on leads.

A short drive away is the pretty village of Dunster, where you can find the prominent Yarn Market on the main street and the charming Gallox Bridge spanning the River Avill. Or you could visit nearby Cleeve Abbey, which boasts the most complete and unaltered set of monastic cloister buildings in England.
