Between 1805 and 1812, faced with the threat of invasion by Napoleon, the British government built a chain of ‘Martello towers ’ – small defensive forts – around the south and east coasts of England. Dymchurch Martello Tower on the Kent coast is one of these ingeniously designed artillery towers, where th e garrison lived on the firs t floo r above the ammunition and storerooms. It has been restored to its original desig n an d re-equipped with its cannon. BEFORE YOU GO Access: You can reach the entrance of the tower from Dymchurch High Street. View details.
