Vagabond is an elegant vintage motor launch, believed to be over 100 years old (although all the timbers have been replaced!) It has a fixed roof and open sides, with wooden benches for seating (you might like to bring a cushion). Trips start from the bottom of the famous Foxton flight of 10 locks, where there is plenty to see, and travel through the beautiful Leicestershire countryside, with fields full of livestock, abundant wildlife, flora & fauna. Public trips run from Foxton Bottom Lock on Sundays, Bank Holidays, some Saturdays and school-holiday weekday afternoons (weather permitting). 20-25 minute trip, no booking necessary, pay on the boat. Adults £3.00, children £2.00, dogs go free! Busy canal-side shop & traditional pub, situated at the bottom of the famous flight of 10 staircase locks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leicester Section, midway between Leicester and Northampton. Set in the beautiful Leicestershire countryside, with historic and interesting villages nearby. Site of the Foxton Inclined Plane Boat Lift, a remarkable piece of Victorian engineering, soon to be undergoing restoration. Many hundreds of canal boats pass through the locks every year, providing a colourful attraction. Wildlife, flora and fauna thrive in the ideal habitat. The network of footpaths and towpaths provide ideal walking, with choice of many routes. The locks and surroundings are freely open and accessible to the public all year round. |
