These two artillery bastions and length of curtain wall on St Mary's in the Isles of Scilly belong to a fort begun - despite its name - in 1551, during the reign of King Edward VI. This fort was left unfinished when the headland now known as The Garrison was chosen as the site of the islands' main fortress, Star Castle. BEFORE YOU GO Access: Situated overlooking the main harbour of St Mary's, the site is best accessed on foot or by bike. How to Find it: Shops, food outlets and toilets are available in Hugh Town PLAN A GREAT DAY OUT The Garrison Walls were also built in the 16th century and can be found across the harbour. Elsewhere on St Mary's you can visit three fascinating prehistoric sites - Porth Hellick Down Burial Chamber, Innisidgen Lower and Upper Burial Chambers and Bant's Carn Burial Chamber and Halangy Down Ancient Village At the Isles of Scilly museum in Hugh Town you can discover more about the rich history of the archipelago.
