KNIGHTS TEMPLAR CHURCH, DOVER

The foundations of this small medieval chapel stand on
 the Western Heights above
 the town of Dover.
It has been linked to the Knights Templar – a military
 and religious order founded
in the 12th century to protect pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land.
The chapel had a circular nave,
which mirrors other churches built by the Templars.
 Alternatively it may
 have been a wayside shrine
on the road between Dover and Folkestone.

PLAN A GREAT DAY OUT
Why not make a day out with a coastal castles tour?

From a Roman lighthouse and 12th century royal palace, to the tunnels where
the 1940 'Miracle of Dunkirk' was planned, Dover Castle,
England's biggest and strongest medieval fortress, has something for everyone.

Or why not try, Walmer Castle and Gardens. Following a major restoration and re-presentation in
honour of the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo
, there's plenty to see and do for everyone.  Enjoy homemade refreshments in
the Lord Warden's Tearoom or browse the plants for sale.

You could also explore Deal Castle, one of the finest Tudor artillery castles
in England.  Built by Henry VIII, who feared invasion
by European Catholic powers, Deal is one of the most
elaborate in a chain of coastal forts. Its squat, rounded bastions were
designed to deflect cannon balls. Discover the castle's history through
the interactive exhibition and explore its dark passages.

There is also a cycle path which links Deal and Walmer castles
, perfectly located along the beachfront.
