This length of Hadrian's Wall, impressively sited along the Whin Sill, commands fine views of many prehistoric and later earthworks to the north. A milecastle within this wall, perched on the very edge of the crag, was re-occupied by a farm in the Middle Ages. BEFORE YOU GO Parking: Charged car parking is available at the Northumberland National Park car park at Housesteads Roman Fort, just over a mile away. Tickets are transferable between other Northumberland National Park car parks along the route of Hadrian's Wall. How to Find It: Follow the National Trail east along the Wall from Housesteads. Access: The route to Sewingshields from Housesteads is along crags, and is high, exposed to wind, and likely to be muddy in wet or wintry weather. Facilities: Housesteads has toilet facilities and a shop selling food and drink. PLAN A GREAT DAY OUT This beautiful section of the wall is a 1 1/2 mile walk away from Housesteads Roman Fort, the most complete Roman Fort in Britain. Chesters Roman Fort is just over seven miles away. Explore the remains of the baths, steam room and officers' quarters and visit the museum full of fascinating Roman finds. There is also a tearoom. Other nearby Hadrian's Wall sites include Black Carts Turret, Temple of Mithras, Carrawburgh, and Brunton Turret.
