Sheringham Park
and rhododendrons are often referred to in the same sentence. Not
surprising with 80 different species on show. Flowers first appear in
December, and the show gradually builds to a climax from mid-May into
June. Many plants were brought to Sheringham by plant collector Ernest
Wilson in the early 20th century. The handkerchief tree, which grows at
the edge of the wild garden, was found by Wilson in China. He discovered
it working from a crude map on a scruffy piece of paper covering an
area of 20,000 square miles with just an 'X' marking its location. Note: Sheringham Hall is privately occupied. April to September: limited access by written appointment with leaseholder.
