St Catherine's Castle is one of a pair of small artillery forts built by Henry VIII in the 1530s to defend Fowey Harbour. It was modified in the 19th century during the Crimean War and again during the Second World War, when it became home to an anti-aircraft gun and an ammunition store. Read more about the history of the castle. BEFORE YOU GO Parking: There is a charged car park next to the site managed by Cornwall County Council. How to Find it: The castle is a 3/4 mile walk from the car park via Ready Money Beach. The first section is a gentle slope down to the beach. From here the walk include s a steep climb through woodland which ca n become muddy in wet weather. Access: The castle is only accessible on foot via a challenging walk. Facilities: Public toilets can be found at Ready Money Beach. Please Be Aware: We recommend sturdy footwear for the challenging walk. There are steep unguarded drops within the castle walls. Dogs: Dogs on leads are welcome. PLAN A GREAT DAY OUT St Catherine's Castle is a short distance from the South West Coastal Path and wel l worth the detour for walkers. You'll find plenty of shops, facilities and place s to eat and drink in the town centre of Fowey, just a 10 minute walk away from Ready Money Cove. The impressive shell of the great 13th century circular keep of Restormel Castle is a few miles up the River Fowey in a beautiful spot. Explore the ruins, walk through the surrounding woodland and enjoy a picnic in the grounds.
