FESTIVAL FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY
Sunflowerfest 2014 promises biggest range of free activities for kids
FAMILIES looking for a weekend to remember this summer had better head to Hillsborough this August. That’s the news this week as organisers of the fifth annual Sunflowerfest revealed the biggest programme of FREE kids’ activities to feature at any event in Northern Ireland.
The festival, famed for its relaxing and family-friendly atmosphere, has worked hard to offer fun-loving families a chance to escape the hustle and bustle in a safe environment where young and old can enjoy the best of music, arts and culture.
Set on Tubby’s Farm, Hillsborough and taking place from August 22nd to August 25th, the specially designed Kidz Zone gives creative kids a chance to try their hands at everything from stilt walking to sculpture, clay modelling to creative arts as well as a wide range of interactive activities including poetry, storytelling, puppetry and painting.
The Enchanted Glade of Mystery and Surprises will also feature a programme of family shows within a wonderland of make-believe.
Vanessa Magowan from Sunflowerfest said, “This really is Northern Ireland’s most family friendly event and because we understand how expensive it can be to keep children entertained during the summer break we have provided a packed programme of free activities.
“Mums, dads, aunts, uncles and the extended family can enjoy the amazing line-up of musical performances. Then have great fun together as their kids learn, create and have fun in a safe, rewarding and healthy environment.”
“Our separate campsite for families means that you won’t miss out on all the fun of the weekend where we even have dancing, face-painting, kids yoga, rock and roll football and even a gyroscope and with our offer of two children under 15 getting free tickets with one adult ticket – having fun this summer doesn’t have to break the bank!”
The programme of activities includes drama and storytelling to keep the kids amused in the Enchanted Glade and festival supporters Ulster Wildlife and the RSPB are also on site in the Lighthouse Bliss area to give families a chance to really discover nature and learn about the environment in fun and engaging ways.
The Eden Project and the Big Lunch are at the festival too and kids will be making bunting to decorate all around the festival and we’ll be having a big lunch as part of the festival.
While young & old can roll up for Bucky’s Circus & learn circus skills including stilt walking & juggling. Jim Russell a regular hit at the festival returns this year to build huge, beautiful willow sculptures with families which are then displayed on the main stage on the last evening of the festival.
Arts and crafts including birds, bees & butterfly art workshops will be led by creative and experienced Kathy Black from Kids Art World and children can design and take away their own beautiful windsock and use recycled materials to make a wildlife stone.
Garryvoe House are at Sunflowerfest running art workshops inspired by the festival and pop art – stencilling favourite artists like One Direction or rock and roll legends for parents and Andrew Cooke skilled artist and crafts person will also be making clay models with the kids and building a kiln to fire the pottery.
Co. Down natives The Answer and London electronica group The Orb will headline the event at Tubby’s Farm, Hillsborough and the chill out area, Lighthouse Bliss offers a wide range of complementary therapies and workshops or festival-goers can debate late into the night in the Moot, an arena of ideas.
