The Thames Barrier is one of the
largest moveable flood barriers in the world. It protects 125 square
kilometres of central London. That’s 1.25 million people, historic
buildings including the Houses of Parliament, offices, power supplies,
tube lines and hospitals to name a few. VisitingThe Environment Agency maintains and operates the Barrier as well as the capital’s other flood defences. These defences include floodgates like the Barking Barrier, and raised river banks. The Barrier is also one of London’s most striking and famous landmarks. With its distinctive stainless steel piers it spans 520 metres across the River Thames Visit the Thames Barrier Information Centre, based next to the Thames Barrier in Woolwich, to view this amazing structure. At the Information Centre you can learn about the history and environment of the River Thames and find out how the Thames Barrier was designed and built and how it works. Overlooking the Thames, with spectacular views of the Barrier, our Café offers a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks and lunches. There is also an outside picnic area and children's play area. There is a pay and display car park on site and free coach parking. Summer: 10.30am to 4.30pm (last admission at 4pm) Winter: 11am to 3.30pm (last admission at 3pm) |
