WHALLEY ABBEY GATEHOUSE

This 14th century gatehouse belonged to the nearby Cistercian abbey, which was once the second wealthiest monastery in Lancashire. The first floor was probably a chapel.

BEFORE YOU GO

Access:  A road known as The Sands runs directly through the gatehouse.

Other Information: There is no access to the interior.

PLAN A GREAT DAY OUT

Nearby Sawley Abbey was also a Cistercian foundation. Set against dramatic hills, the grounds are a great place for a picnic.
