Wheeldale is an enigmatic mile-long stretch of ancient road amid wild and beautiful moorland. The road is probably Roman but possibly later or earlier, and still has its hard core and drainage ditches. Read more about the history of Wheeldale Roman Road. Before You Go Parking: It is possible to park on the roadside, but please take care. Plan a Great Day Out After exploring the road and taking in the spectacular views, visit Whitby Abbey, just seven miles away, and swap the mysteries of the moor for the Gothic splendour that inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula.
