Whitby Whale Watching Centre
From the mid-18th Century, ships headed to Greenland in search of the elusive creatures with dozens of boats returning to bring back the carcasses to be rendered by the harbourside. Thankfully, those days of barbarity are long since gone.

These days it is all about the conservation and protection of whales, as well as dolphins and porpoises. This is done by observing and monitoring their numbers and locations as well as educating and informing all those who go out on trips about the dangers facing these marine animals.

Find us at Brewery Steps (St Ann's Staith) Whitby. – board our superb wildlife yacht the Specksioneer. Alongside the Specksioneer you will see the distinct yellow livery of The Whitby Coastal Cruises vessels Esk Belle III and Kerrera.

Visitors who have enjoyed regular trips to sea on the yellow boats have spotted a whole myriad of whales, birds, seals, porpoises and dolphins over the last decade. But it was the dedicated whale watching trips, which began back in 2006 when Bryan and his crew started spotting more and more whales. While on the sunset and twilight cruises, they had regularly seen 30ft minke whales as well as reported sightings of sperm, fin, sei and northern whales. But the Holy Grail is the humpback whale – spotted annually for the past four years as they pass down the Yorkshire Coast while following huge shoals of herring and mackerel.
